Action Creates Satisfaction

Satisfaction is a universal human pursuit. We all seek it in various aspects of our lives, whether it's in our careers, relationships, personal development, or other endeavors. While we often believe that satisfaction is the result of achieving specific goals or reaching certain milestones, it's essential to recognize that, more often than not, satisfaction is a byproduct of the action we take on a daily basis.

I am a huge basketball fan. I grew up in the greater Los Angeles area of Southern California, so naturally I grew up watching the Lakers and Clippers. One of my favorite players is the late, great Kobe Bryant. In one interview he talked about winning an NBA championship and described the feeling of reaching the pinnacle of human performance and then asking “what now?” as if he was unsure of the next mountain to climb. And in his jersey retirement ceremony at the Staples Center, he said that the journey, not the destination, IS the dream. Living the dream means taking consistent action to improve your life, no matter which phase it is in.

Consider the following ways in which action can create satisfaction within you:

  1. Progress and Achievement: Taking action is the first step toward achieving your goals. When you act on your intentions, you move closer to what you desire. This progress, regardless of how small, brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. It's the feeling of taking steps towards something meaningful that can boost your overall contentment.

  2. Overcoming Inertia: Sometimes, getting started is the most challenging part. Once you initiate action, you break the inertia that often keeps us stuck. This momentum generates a sense of empowerment, and knowing that you can overcome resistance fosters a deep sense of satisfaction and confidence.

  3. Learning and Growth: Action is a teacher. Whether you succeed or face setbacks, every action is a learning opportunity. You gain knowledge, skills, and insights that can contribute to personal and professional growth. The process of learning and evolving is inherently satisfying, as it fulfills our innate desire for self-improvement.

  4. Sense of Purpose: Taking action often aligns with your sense of purpose and values. When your actions are in harmony with what you believe in, you experience a profound sense of fulfillment. You're not just going through the motions; you're living with purpose, which is deeply satisfying.

  5. Expanded Comfort Zones: Each time you take action, you push the boundaries of your comfort zone. Stepping outside of what's familiar and comfortable can be intimidating, but it's also where you discover new experiences and opportunities.

  6. Connection and Relationships: Action often involves interaction with others. Collaborating, helping, or simply engaging in shared activities can strengthen your connections with people. Meaningful relationships are a potent source of satisfaction, and taking action can strengthen these bonds.

  7. Proactive Mindset: Being a person of action signifies a proactive mindset. It's the mindset that says, "I can make things happen." This attitude not only leads to higher productivity but also creates a positive cycle of satisfaction. As you see the results of your actions, you're encouraged to take more actions.

  8. Living in the Present: Action forces you to be present in the moment. Instead of dwelling on past regrets or future worries, you're engaged in what's happening right now. This presence in the moment can bring a deep sense of satisfaction, as you fully experience life as it unfolds.

By taking action, you embrace the process, experience growth, and find joy in the journey. So if you're seeking more satisfaction in your life, remember that it often starts simply with starting. Whether it's pursuing your dreams, improving your well-being, or nurturing your relationships, action is the key that can unlock the door to a more satisfying and fulfilling life.
